Masisa and its commitment to climate change

Masisa has committed itself to address the climate change issue with material actions that will help mitigate its effects. The inclusion in the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) is part of this initiative and I see it as a clear business opportunity for the company, since it is within our forest expansion plan, it drives us to continuous improvement in terms of energetic efficiency and helps us participate in the global carbon credit market. All this, according to Masisa’s long-term business strategy and vision.

By being part of CCX , Masisa agrees to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 6% by 2010, with regard a base line that takes into account years 1998 to 2001. This implies a reduction of approximately 400,000 tons of CO2 by 2010, which is equivalent to remove nearly 140,000 vehicles/year from circulation. The commitment also includes preparing annual reports of our emissions and captures and external audits. To fulfill these objectives we are working hard to have the commitment of all our stakeholders.

It is worth pointing out that due to the business nature, Masisa is an active player in the solution of the problem. Forests capture carbon from the atmosphere, and wood is a renewable and highly recyclable raw material; therefore, our products have a highly positive effect compared to other construction materials.
